2.1kg Muscle From Fast Food Supplement; No Prolactin, No Fat; Oleic Acid Counters CLA's Inflammatory Effect; Spicy Marinades vs. Salmonella; Flaxseed, Estrogen & Penis Size; TTA in the Emergency Room; Alcohol & Binge Eating

I was just about to write another one of my artistic introductions, trying to incorporate all the exciting On Short Notice news I've piled up for you into a brief narrative, when I realized that you probably don't really appreciate those introductions (I guess, I would skip them myself, so don't worry, this is more of an objective assessment than an accusation). So, I listened to my gut and decided to skip this part of this series, today, and rather spend the time to edit another item I did actually not want to post today. It's the one on the "IIFYM slightly gone wrong fast food bulk" in the Hambre study, to be precise; and I would venture the guess that you won't mind taking that instead of a longer introduction, once you've read and digested the impossible: You cannot only gain muscle with "fast food supplements", you won't even get fatter than you would if you just used a classic whey protein... oh my, I see, you are already scrolling down: What I said, I would have been wasting my time, had I written a longer introduction. But dare you, if you don't at least read the other items, as well!

    Without prolactin mice can't get fat! If that is true for humans as well, this would mean that Julien Auffret and his colleagues would have made a very important finding that could help us solve at least part of the diabesity pandemic, if we found a way to mimick the effects the "beigening" (=making white adipose tissue behae similar to the fact burning brown adipose tissue) effect the genetic ablation of the prolactin receptor on the fat cells of the mice in the Auffret study had on their susceptibility to diet induced obesity (Auffret. 2013).
    In particular, the scientists found that the ablation of the prolactin receptor gene in the mice results in profound increases in the expression of master genes controlling brown adipocyte fate (PRDM16) and mitochondrial function (PGC1α, UCP1), which allow - and this is the actual caveat,, here - for an inrease in thermogenesis.
    The latter, in turn, allows the rodents to burn off a major part of the fat they would otherwise store and thus keeps them relatively lean despite HFD feeding. Aside from the fact that the hyperphagic rodents on the high fat diet were still fat (there is no debating that!), you may savely assume that the effects will be way less pronounced in human beings, where 9/10 "thermogenic" agents that have been successfully tested in rodents do nothing at all, anyway. Against that background the hunger-promoting effects of the prolactin recetor ablation would suggest that it is almost as likely that a drug that block prolactin completely would make obese individiuals even fatter, since that's usually what happens if you eat more - like the mice in the prolactin (-/-) group did (see figure figure 1), without burning more.

    Conjugated linoleic acid needs oleic acid to work without side effects. That's the main take-home message from a recent study conducted by researchers at the at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, who found that oleic acid, the mono-unsaturated fatty acid from olive oil & co, does prevent the expression of inflammatory genes in adipocytes treated with the "anti-fat fat CLA"..
    So, until my friends from the supplement industry read this post and come out with yet another SuppVersity science powered product with CLA in olive oil* you simply make sure to have a spoon of the liquid gold from time to time, when you feel that you need to take CLA to burn more fat. Unfortunately, this could not just mean that you can rid yourself of the nasty side-effects as discussed in "CLA Destroys Body Fat! But at Which Costs?", but also that the "body fat destruction" will at least be ameliorated if not totally absent :-(
    * I had hardly written this post, when I browsed the web and found that a certain newcomer and as of late very succesful "yellowish green" company has already a CLA + Olive Oil + Avocado Oil combination on the market, for them this would mean that they didn't even have to change their formula
  • Image 2: It's funny how so many things people (or at least chefs) have been doing forever, here marinating meats, simply make sense, isn't it?
    Antibacterial marinades for your meat! Don't worry this is not yet another dysfunctional functional food that's going to make you sick, but an all-natural mixture of green tea, lemon and turmeric you will have to smear onto your chicken meat if you want to make sure to get rid of the C. jejuni and S. enteritidis it may be contaminated with.
    All it takes are 24h of "incubation", but that's nothing else than leaving your meat lying in the marinade in your fridge and thus something you would do anyway, right? That's what I would call a convenient, effective and above all totally natural and healthy way of gettting rid of Samonella and Campylobacter :-)
  • Tons Flaxseed flour in your diet will increase estrogen, but won't decrease the size of your penis, well at least not visible ;-) That's probably the most straight-forward summary of the results, Ludmila Ferreira Medeiros de França Cardozo and her colleagues present in the latest issue of Food and Chemical Toxicology after analyzing the effect of a flaxseed flour containing diet on the expression of hormone levels and penis morphology of male rats (de Franca. 2013)

    While the rats that were maintained on a diet containing 25g of flaxseed flour per 100g for 250days had significantly elevated estrogen levels in the blood 39.5 vs. 32.5 pg/mL (+22%), the minor drop in testosterone did not reach statistical significance and the reduced diameter of the corpus spongiosum, which helps to maintain the urethea as a viable channel for the ejaculation was obviously no problem for the fertility, either - at least the scientist don't mention anything in this regard; unfortunately, they did not really test it, either, as the poor male Wistar rats that were abused in this experiment were bachelors against their will.
    In view of the fact that flaxseed ain't the best source of omega-3s, anyway, and there appears no other good reason (for men and women!) why you would eat them in large quantities (I am not talking about the occasional tablespoon of flaxseed, here), I would still suggest to stay away from it.
  • Image 4: In farm-raised salmon chronic TTA administration has been shown to improve cardiac function and immune activity; it does however also lead to cardiac growth during viral infections, so that the benefits of chronic administration are still by no means certain (Grammes. 2013a & 2013b); long-term human studies, on the other hand, are not yet available.
    Acute TTA administration soothes the flames and keeps the coronary vessel open You will unquestionably remember my previous posts about the fat burning fatty acid tetradecylthioacetic acid (TTA) and how it's ability to accumulate in various tissues of your body could potentially become problematic. In the short term however, it's anti-inflammatory effects can come very handy. So handy, in fact, that the a recently published study by Pettersen et al. would suggest that we are soon going to see TTA balloons being inserted into coronary vessel walls, in order to deliver the sulfur-containing fatty acid right to an obstructed vessel that's being operated on, in order to suppress the local expression of inflammatory cytokines, as well as the subsequent macrophage infiltration and the unwanted collagen formation, which would precipitate restenosis (=further clogging) of the very heart vessel that has only just been opened operatively.
    You may now rightly ask yourself what this has got to do with you? Well, if it works locally, it could work similarly systemically and other studies such as Bjørndal (2013) do confirm just that: 0.4% TTA reduce TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6 in an experimental model of colitis and render the rodents guts more of less bullet..., ah, pardon, dextran sulfate sodium (DSS; a chemical used to induce cholitis) proof. The long-term effects of the continous consumption of ~3g of TTA, which would be the human equavalent of those 0.4% TTA in the rodent diets is yet still not fully established (re-read: "TTA & Fish Oil" and "TTA & Fish Oil - Revisited").

    Of TV watching, sleep deprivation and alcohol consumption, booze has the most pronounced negative effect on reward saliency and inhibitory control of food intake! That's the conclusion Colin Daniel Chapman, Christian Benedict, Samantha Jane Brooks, and Helgi Birgir Schiöth mkae based on their latest meta-review of pertinent studies from pubmed (N=23). With an impact factor of 1.03 on a scale from -4 to 4, alcohol is by far the worst the greatest effect on food intake and shows the highest correlation with obesity (Chapman. 2013).
    Compared to booze, both sleep deprivation (50% less) and TV watching (20% less) appear almost harmless. Their contribution in the non-drinking part of the population may yet still not be underestimated, also because the urge to do the latter, i.e. watch TV, when you ought tho sleep, precipitates the former and subsequent derangements in the circadian rhythm (suggested read: "The SuppVersity Circadian Rhythm Series").
  • IIFYM was yesterday, ROWFYM is today, but what's going to be tomorrow? If that's all Greek to you, let me first bring you in the loop on the acronyms. While IIFYM designates "If It Fits Your Macros", implies (in the most extreme case) that you give a sh*t about what you eat, as long as you hit your macronutrient ratios for the day ("Carbs? Gimme that pizza!") and is getting increasingly popular among those who are fed up with broccoli and chicken breast and either unwilling or unable to see that those are not the only, and I would say, by far not the most healthy foods you can eat, ROWFYM is my own invention, means "Regardless Of Whether It Fits Your Macros" and would probably end up for way too many trainees in a protocol similar to the one 12 of the 24 subjects in a recent study from the Linköping University in Sweden were following for 12 weeks (Hambre. 2013).

If you want to follow his example, go ahead... but 3 months really is the absolute max and only if you are still healthy - regardless of whether the blood markers return to normal in the course of your next diet.
    While those lucky (?) twelve healthy young men (aged 19–32 years) in what I will from now on call the "fast-food arm" of the study had to add a delicious (???) fast food menu (1350 kcal, 41 g protein) on top of their diets, the other twelve participants had to contend themselves with a blatant protein shake (33g of whey) as their bulking supplement of choice. The reasoning behind this at first sight unquestionably highly questionable experiment was that the Swedish scientists wanted to elucidate, whether it would really make a difference whether you are eating "clean" (=adding a whey protein shake) or simply stuffing yourself with the next best, allegedly protein-laden fast food you can find during a 3-months bulking cycle (at least three lifting sessions per week) and the results were, ... well, let's say surprising.
    As you would expect, subjects in both groups managed to gain some weight. The first surprise is that subjects in both groups gained identical amounts of weight, namely 3.6kg. That's not all, however. Even the lean mass increases 2.1kg did not differ between the groups (measure by DEXA scans) and the sophisticated (compared to a similar calories in vs. calories out calculation) measurement of the resting metabolic rate, the scientists had conducted yielded that both groups had compensated for the overeating by a statistically highly significant (p < 0.0001!) + 10% increase in resting metabolic rate!

    Before you do now jump into your car and head for the next drive-in "restaurant" with a big yellow "M" in front of it, you may want to take into consideration that this extended ROWIFYM version of the IIFYM approach, where you may hit the protein but overshoot on the carbs and fats (and certainly not  the good ones), did lead to statistically significant increases in fasting insulin and ApoB, a building block of LDL that has been associated with increased risk of arterial plaque formation (Gebel. 2008), compared to the "clean bulk" (= whey only) group. And while those changes (as well as the increase in RMR) were reversed on the 12 months follow-up, I am not sure if especially those people, who are most fond of bulking approaches like that, i.e. men (and very rarely women) who have been following a junk food diet for way too long already, should take the results of this study as an incentive to do a 3-month fast food bulk during the winter. After all, it could be that one additional LDL molecule that nests in the already existent arterial plaque which will eventually break the camel's, no your neck - or for those who like it more explicitly, which won't let the next mini blood clot pass by and causes a stroke, which could, in the worst case, end deadly!

    On Short Notice: Ghrelin & GH Boosting Fats for Intermittent Fasting, 4-AD, 5-AA, Testosterone & Co in "Pod", Too Much Vitamin D for Your Prostate, Estrogens in Milk & More

    Image 1 (fidged-group.co.uk): Being average may not be sexy, but one thing I did not mention in the summary of what you are going to learn today is that an average amount of body fat (not the new average American though ;-) could hold the key for a longer life - ah, I almost forgot: This is only valid if it comes with an appropriate amount of lean mass, which is still the best predictor of a long and healthy life!
    Somehow these On Short Notice posts become increasingly longer... I had to "outsource" a couple of items, to reduce today's installment to a manageable length, but don't worry a couple of them will turn up in the next installment or make it into the regular news in the days to come. For now you will have to settle for valuable and at least in part surprising insights into the broad range of effects different types and loads of dietary fat can have on your appetite, metabolism and your, or rather your bacterial subtenants' methane production. You will also learn what TAC means and why you want more than 1,080 units of it in every 100g of whatever you are stuffing down your pie-hole. You will be surprised to hear that SuppVersity student FatFree instinctively chose the low estrogen variety of dairy, when he "downed 1l of raw goat's milk" from his local farmer earlier today (see respective comment) and you will attend another lesson of the "what's good for your obese neighbor, is not necessarily good for you" class. All that will be topped of with some testosterone laden, WADA prohibited "pod", too much vitamin D for your prostate to handle and a glass of bone-conserving wine for the habitual drinkers among the ladies ;-)

    Fat Interactions - MUFA, PUFA, SUFA and How They Influence Your Metabolism

    The idea that "not all fats" are created equal is meanwhile broadly accepted. What is still a matter of constant debate, though, is which of the three main classes, i.e. saturated, mono- and polyunsaturated fatty acids exert beneficial and which of them detrimental effects on our health. A recently published on the differential effects of butter (saturated fat), olive oil (mono-unsaturated; oleic acid + a relative high amount of omega-6), fish oil (polyunsaturated; high omega-3) and soybean oil (polyunsaturated; mainly omega-6 + some omega 3) on the expression of the purported "hunger hormone" ghrelin (note: acetylghrelin, which was measured in this study, is the "active" variety of ghrelin) may yet help to get a better grasp of what exactly we should be looking for (Saidpour. 2013), when it comes to the downstream metabolic effects of high amounts of certain fatty acids - and no, it is not for maximal ghrelin suppression.

    As the data data in figure 1 shows, the 5-week old male Wistar rats who had been randomly assigned to either standard rodent chow or calorically identical (3.98kcal/g of food) high fat diets who were fed ad libitum every other day only to maximize the ghrelin response) for 8 weeks did not, as common sense would suggest, eat the least and gain the least on the saturated fat (butter) diet with its long lasting satiety effect (as evidenced by the lowest fasting ghrelin levels).

    In fact, the exact opposite was the case: The acute satiety effect of the fish oil and olive oil diets (as evidenced by the plummeting acetylghrelin levels in the fed state) turned out to be the main determinant of the amount of food the rodents, who were effectively intermittently fasted (though with a pretty long fasting window of 24h), consumed.  And while the low ghrelin levels in the fed state reduced the food intake, the fasting induced rise of acetylghrelin to 23% higher levels than in the butter fed animals has probably given them the metabolic advantage of elevated growth hormone levels. At least this is what we must expect based on the ability of ghrelin to directly bind to the GHS receptor and induce the release of the fat annihilating 191-amino acid, single-chain polypeptide from the lateral wings of the anterior pituitary gland (Kojima. 1999).
    Bottom line: While this is certainly only another small piece to the oftentimes puzzling effects of fatty acids (check the "On Very Short Notice" items in this installment for more "puzzling" effects ;-), it does not only provide another mechanism by which the original "Mediterranean diet", which is rich in both fish and olive oil and by no means as fat free as its latest mainstream interpretation would suggest, could in fact provide a metabolic edge. And though the "intermittent fasting" feeding pattern may reduce the significance of the results for the "average" inhabitant of the Western hemisphere, who can hardly go 2h without a Snickers bar or at least a sugar-laden coffee, it does suggest that all the "lean gainers" and "intermittent fasters" out there could derive great benefits from a huge piece of salmon and couple of tablespoons of high MUFA olive, macadamia or artichoke oil in their "feeding windows".

    A Diet High in Dietary Antioxidant Keeps you Lean & Healthy

    You know that I am very critical when it comes to the supply of exogenous antioxidants (cf. "Multivitamins, a question of Faith?!"; more on multivatmins), but would never even remotely consider limiting the supply of whole foods that are rich in antioxidants. I was thus not very surprised, when I read that the consumption of high amounts of dietary antioxidants was associated with statistically significant lower body weight and abdominal fat gain in a 3-year longitudinal (this is where scientists analyze data from the same persons on different time-points) study from the University of Medical Sciences in Teheran (Bahadoran. 2013).

    In particular, Zarah Bahadoran and her colleagues found that the consumption of foods with an average total antioxidant capacity equal to 1,080µmol TAC essay units per 100g - something your would get from oats + blueberries or a handful of pecans and an apple - was associated with a -38 % decrease in the risk of central obesity (note: The TAC essay is an experimental measure of the total antioxidant capacity of food and is independent of whether it's phenols, vitamins, thiols or whatever that contribute to the antioxidant effects of a food; the clear disadvantage of this method is that it does not really tell you what exactly the compounds will do outside of a petri dish, but, but this is the topic for another blogpost ;-)

    And while some of the confounding factors have been eliminated from the above hazard risk calculations, it is still worth to take note of the fact that...
    • people with the highest antioxidant intake consumed food with the lowest energy density (so they cannot be eating nuts and chocolate only ;-)
    • women consumed significantly more antioxidants than men, with +10% more women in Q3 (959-1080µmolTE/100g) and +15% more women in the critical Q4 (>1,080µmol/kg) quartiles
    • the more leisure time the subjects had, or I should say allowed themselves, the higher was their antioxidant intake
    • high antioxidant consumers were also dairy lovers with 81% more dairy consumption in the highest quartile, exactly those people, thus, who consumed the >1,082 µmolTE/100mg diets
    • needless to say that people who are reckless enough to smoke also consumed the least antioxidants
    Aside from these significant differences, the non-existence of other differences people often take for granted, such as the notion that education and job activity, or different macronutrient compositions would have an impact on the total amount of antioxidants you consume, is certainly worth mentioning.

      On Very Short Notice

    • Figure 2: "Pod" contains a hell lot of steroids. Unfortunately, most of them will be dumped by right into the urine specimen for the WADA agents (data based on Thevis. 2013)
      "Pod" doping could get you banned, but probably won't increase your performance - While I cannot tell you what the swimmers at the Olympics have been taking to break world record after world record (some even in consecutive races on the same day), I can tell you that it were not the reddish-brown musk grains from the dried secretion from the preputial follicles of the male musk deer , which are located in the "pod", a small sac in close proximity to the preputial orifice (see figure XYZ, upper right), because none of these athletes would have passed the WADA doping controls had he or she taken a couple of grams of those steroid-containing staples of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
      Now, despite the fact that we do see "classics" such as 4-AD, Androsterone, Epiandrosterone, DHEA and even minuscule amounts of the "Big T" (1-6µg/g with the highest level in the pod from the zoo animals from Leipzig, Germany - read more about testosterone's ability to build muscle in the "Intermittent Thoughts on Building Muscle") testosterone , the total amount of those compounds which could actually induce noticeable performance increases may be high enough to show up during doping controls as the five cases during the last FIFA Women World Cup show(cf. Thevis. 2013), it does not appear reasonable to assume that the rumored performance enhancing effects of musk (pod) extracts would stand the test in a placebo controlled supplementation trial.
    • Figure 3: When administered at a HED of ~750mg/day sodium salicates reduce the glucose (left axis) and insulin (right axis) levels in response to a standardized intraperitoneal glucose injection in obese mice, they do the opposite in lean mice (based on Nixon. 2013).
      Salicates block cortisol expression in fat cells and increase insulin sensitivity in obese mice, but... as we have seen for alpha lipoic acid (see "ALA? You are Better of Without the Purported Nutrient Repartitioner") and tons of other "wonder-supplements", things that are good for your obese neighbor will rarely work out for lean folks like, yourself; and thus it should not come as a surprise that the blockade of adipose tissue 11-beta-HSD, the enzyme that converts cortisone, the inactive form of cortisol into it's active twin, exerts no, if not the exact opposite effect (see figure 3; adapted from Nixon. 2013).
      So, if you are lean and want to stay lean, leave the aspirin, the 7-ketos and other overpriced 11-beta-HSD inhibitors or "cortisol blockers" to those who need them - inflamed, overweight (pre-)diabetics.
    • Purportedly anti-carcinogenic high vitamin D levels increase risk of prostate cancer - Swedish scientists found a statistically significant trend towards an increased risk of developing prostate cancer with rising vitamin D levels. In the 7th and 8th decile which corresponds to plasma vitamin D levels of 91-97 nmol/L the calculated risk of developing prostate cancer was 67% higher than in the lowest decile (Brändstedt. 2013). Other than previous studies which reported associations between high calcium intake and prostate cancer risk, Brändstedt et al. observed an association between high serum calcium levels and prostate cancer levels only among men aged 55-65 who had a BMI < 25. It is thus very unlikely that the underlying reason of the pro-carcinogenic effects was an increase in calcium absorption... hmm, I don't have to remind you of (a) the antagonism between vitamin D and vitamin A and (b) last weeks news on the anti-carcinogenic effects of the latter, do I?
    • Image 3: Although the scientists controlled the compliance by measuring the serum concentration of fatty acids instead of using unreliable food logs, there are still  a lot of uncontrolled confounding variable, here. Hower, the same can be said of those studies on which the concept of the pro-inflammatory omega-6s is based. Anyway, I will still eat butter, not margarine and if olive oil is one of staple sources of dietary fat, you will be getting plenty of omega-6 from this purported GH booster (see previous new item)
      High omega-6 diet reduces insulin, total/HDL-cholesterol ratio, LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides - Helena Bjermo and her colleagues from the Uppsala University in Sweden report that feeding 67 abdominally obese patients (15% were diabetic) either a butter-based high saturated fat diet or a diet that was particularly rich in linoleic acid (omega-6 mainly from sunflower oil; 15% of the total energy intake) for 10 weeks had very differnt effects on the hepatic fat content an other highly relevant markers of metabolic health. Despite the fact that both diets were isocaloric, the butter-based high saturated fat diet increased the hepatic fat content of the study participants (measured by MRS) by 10% while the subjects in the high PUFA group were able to reduce the fat content of their livers by -35%. Similarly, the basal insulin level, triglycerides, as well as total and LDL cholesterol increased in the butter eaters and decrease or remained the same in the 15% linoleic acid group.
      The results are honestly not what I had expected, but in essence only further evidence there is still a lot to learn about the shades of grey that exist between the dichotomous black and white that is still so characteristic of the way we think about fats.
    • Goat's milk is the better choice for people concerned with limiting their intake of exogenous estrogens - According to analyses that were conducted at the Laboratory of Proteomics and Analytical Technologies in Frederick (Farlow. 2013), cow's milk contains significantly more estrogens (estrone and 17beta-estradiol) than goat's milk and that irrespective of whether it was organically produced or not. Bad news for the reproductive health of the North Americans and Europeans, where the consumption of cow's milk exceed that of goats milk by several magnitudes and good news for the fertility of the rest of the world, where goat's milk still is the "milk of choice".
    • Image 4: Looks like this was not the only potential side effect of methane producing bacteria in your gut.
      High fat diets increase the ratio of methane producing to other bacteria and thus increase obesity risk - Most of you will probably remember the finding that mice without gut microbiome are more or less resistant to dietary induced obesity. A recent study does now suggest that (as it was to be expected) not all bacteria are created evil.. ah, pardon... equal ;-) In the lab mice of Ruchi Mathur and his colleagues, the tendency to develop obesity correlated with the amount of gastrointestinal (GI) methanogens, including Methanobrevibacter smithii, and was independent of the presence of other bacteria (Mathur. 2013).
      With the pro-methanogenic (=allows those little bastards to grow) effects of high fat diets Mathur et al. may in fact have found another potential co-founder in the development of the metabolic syndrome. Interestingly enough Methanobrevibacter smithii is also the predominant methanogen in patients with constipation-dominant IBS and methane breath (Kim. 2013) - so if that is you, this could be one of the few cases where the use of a broadband antibiotic could save you from a lot of ailments, because you would thus not have to care about contradictory results from Million et al., as well as dozens of other studies, each of which identifies another type of bacteria as 'the root cause' of the obesity epidemic - in Million's case the name of the scapegoat is Lactobacillus reuteri, by the way (Million. 2013).
    • Mediocrity guarantees a long life - At least when it comes to body fatness being too lean and being too fat are equally detrimental to the life expectancy of male 65+ agers (Toss. 2013). If you are women, though, the results Fredrik Toss and his colleagues published in the latest issue of Age and Ageing suggest that being on the chubbier side of things can actually be life-saving, as long as you carry the fat in the gynoid and not the abdominal area. Most importantly, however, lean mass, or as my buddy Carl Lanore calls it, "metabolic currency" is yet still the most significant predictor of survival in older subjects - in other words: Don't even think of emulating the skinny fat celebrities with their starvation diets and endless cardio sessions if you intend to live your grand- and grand-grand-children, better check out yesterday's news on the "Iranian HIIT Solution for Improved Insulin and Leptin Sensitivity".
    • Image 5: If you are concerned about bone health, menopause is not the best time to stop drinking... unless you start weight lifting, of course ;-)
      Don't stop drinking alcohol in menopause! At least if you don't want to increase bone-resorption, i.e. the leeching of calcium from your bones. This is the surprising result of a recently published study by Jill A. Marrone and colleagues, who had  investigated the effects of total abstinence from alcohol in 40 healthy postmenopausal women (mean ± SE age, 56.3 ± 0.5 y) who consumed the alcohol equivalent of ~1 glass of wine per day (Marrone. 2013). Interestingly, the bone formation marker osteocalcin and the resorption marker C-terminal telopeptide (CTx) returned to their normal values, once the women resumed their former drinking habits.
      In view of the fact that there was also a significant correlation between baseline bone-density, as measured dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry, and the extent of mild to moderate alcohol consumption, these results raise the question whether "bone health" would be another factor to add to the list of the "minimalist approach" to alcohol consumption.

    The Ergogenic Effect of Nonalcoholic Beer Front- & Back Loading + 15 Beerish Health Facts Everyone Should Know

    Where else, if not from Germany, "The Land of Beer and Weißwurst" as it is falsely perceived by the average foreign Oktoberfest visitor, could the data for a study on the ergogenic effects of nonalcoholic beer originate from? In their recently published paper Johannes Scherr and his colleageas from the Department of Prevention and Sports Medicine at the Klinikum rechts der Isar of the Univerisity of Munich report that a 'forntload + post-supplementation' strategy (3 weeks before, 2 weeks after) with 1-1.5l/day of Erdinger Weißbräu Alkoholfrei led to statistically significant reductions in post-race total blood leukocyte counts (-9%) and interleukin-6 (-24%) and 66% lower incidence of upper-respiratory tract infections in the 58 beer-drinking subjects (age: 36-51y), when compared to their 63 peers(age:35-49y) who received an isocaloric control beverage, which differed from the beer only in terms of its polyphenol content (Scherr. 2013).

    It's not all about Erdinger Alkoholfrei  - 15 Beerish Health Facts You Should Know

    In fact, the ergogenic effects Scherr et al. observed in their most recent study are probably nothing but one of the manifold downstream effects of the nutrient dense non-alcoholic fraction of 'amber nectar', which consists of a whole host of bioactive ingredients with at least as many, mostly beneficial health effects (the following is in part based on Sohrabvandi. 2010; where other references were used, additional references are provided):
    How exactly is nonalcoholic beer produced?
    • Fermentation-free brewing and dilution procedures won't produce results European or US costumers will be happy with, therefore it is mostly used in Islamic countries
    • Alcohol removal by vacuum destillation, adsorptive alcohol removal, dialysis, reverse osmosis, or osmotic distillation
    • Restricted alcohol fermentation uses yeast that can only partially ferment the wort or represses or interrupts fermentation by applying different compositional and/or process procedures (interrupted fermentation technique)
    • Fermenting with GMO bacteria which lack the alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) enzyme and produce no or minimal amonts of alcohol.
    • Reducing fermentable fractions / glucose content in wort by adjusting the concentration of sugar in the primary formulation so that no considerable sugar residue remains after the restricted fermentation period.
    • Heating or pressurizing the wort to inactivate yeast cells and inhibit the subsequent alcoholic fermentation, as soon as the desired flavor profile of the wort was achieved
    Note: The beer in the study at hand was brewed under tightly controlled temperature (the exact method is apparently a company secret, though).
    • has potentially blood pressure lowering effect due to high potassium to sodium ratio (typically 4:1) 
    • is relatively rich in magnesium and to less extent in phosphorous
    • contains glutathione precursors and co-factors zinc, copper, selenium and amino acids
    • features physiologically active immuno-modulatory peptides and proteins
    • has 35+ phenolic compounds (about 80–90% from malt and 10–20% from hops)
    • may prevent and improve obesity and type-2 diabetes, improve lipid metabolism, and suppress atherosclerosis due to beneficial health effects of the bitter substances in hops (Kondo. 2004)
    • has been shown to improve sleep and lactation in women; probably due to bioactive molecules from hops (Koletzko. 2000; Franco. 2013)
    • contains folate and glycine betaine which exert antimutagenic effects and reduce homocysteine
    • has up to 6.2g fiber per liter
    • its β-pseudouridine content may protect against radiation damage (Monobe. 2003)
    • contains silicic acid which increases renal excretion of aluminum (Aluminum has been associated with age related diseases and neurodegeneration; cf. Krewski. 2007)
    • is associated with higher hip mineral density in older men who drink 2 regular beers/day; probably due to its silicon content (Tucker. 2009)
    • provides more antioxidants per day than wine to the U.S. diet (Vinson. 2003)
    • exerts anti-oxidative effects on lipoproteins (=cholesterol) which are superior to that of its vitamin & antioxidants, alone (Vinson. 2003)
    • unfortunately, allegedly gluten-free barley based beers contain significant amounts of hordein (=gluten) and are not suitabe for patients with celiac disease (Colgrave. 2013)
    Now compare that to your average energy drink, which - as you should by now be aware of - may deliver zero fat calories and will still add 18g /day of body fat right to your frame, when consumed on a daily basis (cf. "Fat Content Per Energy Drink 0g, Body Fat Gain Per Energy Drink 18g!")
    Image 2 (FOX): Homer always knew what Schütze et al. confirmed in 2009: "Beer consumption leads to [waist circumference] gain [...] closely related to overall weight gain. This study does not support the common belief of a site-specific effect of beer on the abdomen."
    Implications: In view of the fact that carbohydrate supplementation is still common practice among endurance athletes, I don't see why a refreshing nonalcoholic beer (1.5l of Erdinger Weißbreu Alkoholfrei contain 375kcal and ~75g of carbohydrates)  that has been brewed according to the German purity law should not be at least as good as one of those sugar-laden electrolyte drinks or gels with artificial colorings and what not.

    Moreover, the relatively high phenolic content of the beer (~400 mg of gallic acid equivalents per day), of which Scherr et al. speculate that it was the underyling reason for the observed benefits, could render the use of other polyphenolic supplements obsolete, save you money and keep you healthy and sane, as only few people are like me don't like the taste of beer and can thus sit in the Biergarten with nothing but plain water, while their friends hoist brew after brew... although, when I come to think about it: Maybe I should order some Erdinger later today? *rofl*

    Note: The study was financed from a fund that was established by the Erdinger Weissbraeu, Werner Brombach GmbH. Contrary to some other researchers Scherr et al. do yet openly disclose the funding and state that "the funders had nodirect role in the study’s design, conduct, analysis, interpretation of data, and reporting" - and before you start lamenting, now, think about who finances and conducts the studies on pharmaceuticals...
